Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?
I owned my own business as a personal trainer for 2 years and I still currently work in Strength & Conditioning. I am currently the Fitness Manager for LivingWell Health Club. I also am a Sideline Official for the National Rugby league.
Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?
I used to be an Accountant and needed a change. I love Health and Fitness, and have been involved in Rugby League for 15 years, so I thought I should give personal training a go!
Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?
I find a passion in helping others achieve what I have achieved: A fun healthy and positive lifestyle. I love passing on what has been taught to me and now, I am giving the same opportunities to others that were given to me.
Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?
Currently, this battle we are engaged in to play music in a health club could have been dealt with in a much better professional fashion. The proposed price hike is unrealistic and will mean a lot of budget health clubs will close and therefore health and fitness will not be available to those that are on a budget.
Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?
I have studied all my courses through Fitness Institute Australia. Certificate III in Fitness _ Fitness Instructor, Certificate IV in Fitness – Personal Trainer and the Diploma of Fitness – Fitness Specialist. Thanks to FIA I am enrolling to Australian Catholic University to complete the Degree in Exercise Science.
Q: How important do you think it is to update your learning in the fitness world?
The fitness industry, no matter what specialisation, is an ever evolving industry. Keeping up to date with this evolution is very important for not only personal development, but also client credibility.
Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?
The fitness industry needs better regulation with common industry standards that can be applied across the board to all fitness professionals/organisations. I think the minimum qualification to enter the industry should be the Diploma of Fitness. I would also love to see the Award wage system reviewed so that the people in the industry are reimbursed good work.
Q: Any predictions?
The industry will become holistic and a one stop shop. Health Clubs will become gymnasiums, pools, spas, massage therapists, physiotherapists and even maybe counsellors, beauticians and hairdressers. People are looking to find more time in their ever busy lives and so I think the industry will head into a holistic one stop shop approach.
Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?
Always be willing to learn. The industry will always be bigger than the individual. Be smart and absorb good information and keep updating your skills. There is never too much education to be learnt. That's why the FIA are the best educational provider in the fitness industry. They cater for everything.
